What the heck is Ayurveda?

If you live in the US, chances are you've never heard of Ayurveda (pronounced eye-your-veda) before. Or maybe you've heard of it and don't really know what it is or how it could help you. So what the heck is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, originating from India, is one of the oldest holistic healing systems dating back between 2,000-5,000 years ago.

“Ayur” means life and “Veda” means science or sacred knowledge. Ayurveda is the “sacred science of life”. It is sometimes referred to as the “mother science of yoga” or as a “sister science” of yoga.

Today modern science is now recognizing the incredible efficacy of Ayurveda practices in healing disease and modern imbalances.

Ayurveda reminds us that we are part of the natural world and that by aligning our body and rhythms with the natural world, we align ourselves to thrive. In our connection to nature, Ayurveda reminds us that each of us is unique.

At its foundation, Ayurveda seeks to restore balance. And, since it recognizes each of us as unique, treatment and protocols are tailored to the individual. Practices focus on lifestyle, plant medicine and food.
