What is a dosha?

If you've heard of #Ayurveda then chances are you've heard the word #dosha. Doshas are energies that pervade the body and mind, each with different functions. Knowing your dosha, and if a dosha may be out of balance, can help you live a healthier, more balanced life.

In Ayurveda the five elements - earth, water, fire, air and ether- are found in everything (including us), and they are the building blocks of life. The manifestation of the elements through dosha is what makes each of us unique. The proportion of each element gives you the physical and emotional and mental tendencies that make you uniquely you. The role that doshas play is also influenced by, and constantly changing, in response to stress, the season and weather conditions, and the time of life you are in.

The three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. And you have all three of them in you and they are necessary for living. They appear in different amounts in each person. #Vata Dosha is composed of the qualities of air and ether. #Pitta Dosha is composed of fire and water qualities. And #Kapha Dosha is made up of earth and water elements. Each dosha has corresponding qualities that are expressed in one's mental, emotional, and physical being. All of us have aspects of all of the doshas, but one or two tend to dominate.
